Unit 1- August - We will begin the year with our School Unit. We will review school vocabulary and then talk about the names of places in the school. We will learn several verbs associated with school (for example, to write, to walk, to run, to glue, to cut, to ask, to look, to look for, to want...) and will use gestures to help us remember the verbs. Our first project, is to watch a video about a dog in a school who is looking for the French Class. The students will watch the video without sound and will then tell the story together using the verbs and vocabulary that they have learned. Later, students will read the story that they created in both English and French. The class will then create a new story with the teacher about two students who are in the class, who want something somewhere in Morris Brandon. Finally, students will work with a partner to create their own version of the last story using the same vocabulary and verbs. They will present their story to the class for a grade.
Our second project under the School Theme will be to read a story about an alien who comes to Earth and visits a school. Students will identify the verbs and vocabulary in the story and will later use them to create an ending to the alien story. This is always a very fun project! Students will share their ending stories with each other.
Unit 2- September - A l'Ecole (school), Prepositions, and Telling Time
In September, we will continue the school unit by working with prepositions to the mix. We will create sentences in writing and orally about where are school objects are (the pen is on the desk - the notebook is under the chair, etc.) The students will write four sentences such as these and illustrate each one for their final project. Finally, we will briefly touch on telling time. They will get a lot more of this in 4th so we will only spend two days on time. We will talk about military time, how we write and read time in French, and they will read a story about a boy and when he does certain activities during the day and the problems he runs into because he is late. The students will sequence the events of the story to demonstrate their comprehension.
Unit 3 - October- November - Dans une Ile- On An Island
Our third unit is about islands! How fun! At the end of this unit, the students will be able to write and say sentences about an island, what there is on an island (geographical features, and animals) and what they can do at different places (swimming in the lagoon and the river, or walking in a cave or in the mountains). The students will act out a story about two cousins who visit an island with a tour guide. One cousin is looking for a shell to make a necklace and the other cousin is looking for a feather for his cap.
Unit 4 - late November - December - Our fourth unit is about Heros and Heroines! The students will identify their heros and heroines in the world and their our community and be able to describe them using various adjectives, including our IB Profile character words (knowledgeable, thinker, risk taker, etc.) The students will choose one hero and heroine and write about him or her for their final project. We will also start learning our song for the Holiday Performance on the 22nd of December. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5wDvmCmtq4 - here is the link to practice at home
Unit 5 - January - We will finish the Hero Unit by talking about how we can be heros at home. We will learn how to say different activities around the house (I fold the laundry. I sweep. I wash the dishes. I make my bed.) Finally, we will describe superheros and create our own superhero. Students will write five sentences describing their superhero and will draw him or her.
Unit 6 - February - La Maison (house) & Furniture & La Television- In La Maison Unit, students will talk about different furniture in the house. They will form sentences about where the furniture is using prepositions. For the final project, students will create a story describing a house in a mystery city. Ask your child to read to you their story. Towards the end of the month, we will begin the Television Unit. We will talk about different kinds of tv programs (drama, comedy, news, weather, etc.) Students will describe the shows using adjectives learned during Hero Unit. They will say what shows they like and do not like, they will interview each other, and interview their parents.
Unit 7 - Mid-March - Dans une Goute de Pluie (In a raindrop)-
This unit revolves around a story called Goute de Pluie (Raindrop) where several insects see themselves in a raindrop and think that it is another insect caught in the raindrop. Finally the dragonfly laughs and tells all of his insect friends that they are only seeing their own reflections.
The students will identify different kinds of insects and they will learn the names of the different places where the insects take shelter when it rains. We will sing many songs about insects and the students will use their new vocabulary (names of insects) with verbs and prepositions to write sentences describing pictures of insects in a forest. The students will also draw their own pictures of an insect home and will write a description of the picture.
Unit 8 - April-May - Dans la Foret - This unit follows perfectly the Goute de Pluie story. It explores the insect world in a forest. Using all of their knowledge from the previous unit, the students will be able to read and write about insects in a forest, where they hide and where they work.
