2nd grade classes: Ms. Leathers
Unit 1 - August - Greetings, Colors, Numbers, Body Parts - We will begin the year with learning how to greet each other, present ourselves, present others, count to 12, and identify objects by their color. We will also talk about our eyes, and hair color and identify each other by hair and eye color. We will also sing a song about body parts that hurt - my head hurts, my nose hurts, my ears hurt, etc. Finally we will perform a couple of skits, one about some animals who are learning the colors of a rainbow, and another, about five monkeys who are getting hurt because they are jumping on a bed.
Unit 2 - Late September - We will begin our unit on Animals. The students will be able to name several different animals who live with humans. They will be able to say what the animals do (walk, run, jump...) and what they look like (small, big, their color). They will also be able to describe the personality of their pet (shy, funny, nice, beautiful) Our final project will be to write a poem about a pet using the verbs, and adjectives/characteristics from the unit. The students will also act out a skit about a child who is looking for a pet. She has to ask several questions in order to find the pet that is right for her.
Unit 3 - October & November - Emotions and Family We will explore emotions, review body parts, and put it all together by talking about our family. By the end of the unit, the students will be able to express in writing and orally how they feel (I am sad. I am happy) and how others feel. They will be able to describe their family members' hair color and eye color and how they are feeling in various pictures.
Unit 4 - December - Holiday Program - December (homeroom teachers will notify parents in their weekly blasts about the exact time of the performance.) December 19th at 8:30
Unit 5 - January into February - Henriette se sauve - This unit is all about the community. We will read a story about a mouse that runs away from her cage in the pet store. We will read about where she goes and wear she hides. Students will learn the names of different places and objects in all of the shops. They will sing songs that ask "where is Henriette?", they will say "she's hiding", "she's running away", "she's hungry", "she's sad", "she's thirsty." Ask your child to sing one of the songs from the unit.
Unit 6 - March- April -Dans une Goute de Pluie (In a raindrop)-
This unit revolves around a story called Goute de Pluie (Raindrop) where several insects see themselves in a raindrop and think that it is another insect caught in the raindrop. Finally the dragonfly laughs and tells all of his insect friends that they are only seeing their own reflections.
The students will identify different kinds of insects and they will learn the names of the different places where the insects take shelter when it rains. We will sing many songs about insects and the students will use their new vocabulary (names of insects) with verbs and prepositions to write sentences describing pictures of insects in a forest. The students will also draw their own pictures of an insect home and will write a description of the picture.
Unit 7 - May - Les Parties du Corps et La Famille (Body Parts, Family, & House) In this unit, the students will review body parts learned in first grade and will use their knowledge of colors to describe each other. We will play a game where each student writes a description of another student in the class and then the class will guess who it is. We will then apply these skills to describing our family members. (My mother's name is __. She has __ hair and ___ eyes.) The students will share their descriptions of their families with each other.
We will then move into our house unit. We will listen to and read stories about families in their homes and what they do. The students will learn the names of furniture in different rooms of the house and they will use this new knowledge to write a poem about a house. This will be their final project.
