5th Grade
Unit 1 - August & September - Students will work on comprehension and communication strategies - asking questions and asking for directions in the first unit -Natalie au Quebec. We will read a story about a girl, English speaker, who travels to Quebec and stays with a host family. - We will also look at community places and how to say that we go to different places in the community. Students will create a story with the teacher about a foreign exchange student who speaks English. The student travels to a French speaking country and has to ask many questions and use communication skills during her time abroad.
Unit 2 - October - Directional Terms - Students will learn how to give and receive directions. They will create a skit with a partner where one person asks for directions to a place in the community. The other partner will give the directions using directional terms such as Go straight and then turn right or turn left, take your second right and continue forward, etc. We will watch various videos of people asking and receiving directions in French.
Unit 3 - October - Novembre - Restaurant Unit - We will begin this unit by creating a "Soupe de Sorciere" (Witch Soup) - Mid-October, we will sing a song about a witch who creates a soup with various foods and animal parts (tails, hair,etc.). The students will work together to create their own soupe de sorciere and present it, singing to the class. After Halloween, we will dive into the Restaurant Unit. We will review various food and beverage vocabulary and how to say "I'm hungry" and "I'm thirsty". We will listen to and practice dialogue for being a polite server and customer in a restaurant. Students will create their own restaurant skit in groups of three and will present their skit to the class as their final project.
Unit 4 - December - Practice our Holiday song - Students will write a song that follows the tune of the 12 days of Christmas.
Unit 5 - January - February- We will finish our Restaurant Unit. Students will create a song, in groups, about what they like and don't like to eat. They will also create and present their restaurant skit for their final project.
Unit 6 - March - April - Pauvre Alphonse - In this unit we will first review how we describe individuals by facial features. Students will learn new vocabulary for hair (straight, curly, wavy), eyes, mouth, and nose (pointed, hooked, small). They will also learn clothing vocabulary. With this new vocabulary, Students will describe each other. They will then read a detective story about a crime. Using facial and clothing descriptions, students will try to identify the thief in the story. As a final project, students will create their own description of a suspect and illustrate it. They will also work with others to create a shopping skit using unit clothing vocabulary.
Finally, we will begin to work on learning our graduation song.
